When Good Friends Say Good Bye

When we look back at our lives, we usually note the books that we read, the work that we do and the people that we meet. If you can imagine a sheet of paper, our lives are like straight lines. There will be some lines which just cut across our line, these represent friends or people who come into our lives for a short time. Then there are lines that for sometime, merge with us, and then part away. These are friends who spent some time with us but then left us, for everyone is on their own journey in life. Yesterday, we said good bye to one of our best friends, Ebb and Rory Hinchliffe.

They were leaving for Dallas after being here for 2 years. They lived in a magnificent house in Ampang, where every morning at sunrise, Ebb would watch the birds and admire the magnificent sunrise behind KLCC while excitedly anticipating the new day.

As I write this email, 12 hours after their departure, they should still be in the air as their flight, via Japan Airlines, with one refueling stop at Narita, will take approximately 23 hours.

My wife, Pauline, used to work for Ebb at Volt, but based at Texas Instrument (TI). They started the Volt recruitment business in TI from scratch, going through many obstacles and frustrations together. The funny thing was that they even had to contend with a very difficult Volt country manager, who despite working for the same company, was never on their side. It's a long story but Ebb and Pauline love for their staff was evident to everyone in TI. They made a good team. Rory provided the moral support with her excellent cooking and constant encouragement, just like what the picture below shows.

Although I may be young and foolish, I do know that there's a bond between good friends that never break. Similar to the bond between a mother and her child, friends have a bond that tugs the heart whenever the other is near.

Ebb, Rory, it was a wonderful experience knowing the both of you. I believe Pauline was so lucky to have you as a boss and friend. The both of you will probably never read this post and will never know how much last year's Thanksgiving dinner meant to us.

Good luck to you both. God is always kind to nice people. And you're one of them.
