The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done. Arnold Palmer

If you attained your dream too easily, you aimed too low. The difficulty of attainment of a dream raises its value. David DeFord

Let us not be content to wait and see what will happen, but give us the determination to make the right things happen. Peter Marshall

Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point. Harold B. Melchart

The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to fulfilling your dreams. Og Mandino

How the size of the Space Shuttles fuel tanks were determined by Horses' Arses!

Did you know that the width of the US railway tracks is exactly 4 feet 8.5 inches?

A little research brings to light an interesting chronology. The original railway tracks throughout the US were laid by the same people who laid the first tram tracks in the cities across America. What would be more logical than to use the same measurement used while building tram tracks that had proven perfectly workable for decades? So far, so good. But why would tram builders settle for such a bizzare number?

Because the infancy of tram building saw many horse-wagon builders switch form wagon building to tram building. Along with their expertise in building carriages of all sorts came their tools and the measurements they used to build horse-wagons. OK, so why would horse-wagons use such an unmanageable number?

Because the horse-wagon building tradition of America started in England. Any other measurement than 4 feet 8.5 inches would have spelt instant doom for any carriage on English roads. 4 feet 8.5 inches was the standard measurement on all road in England.

Now that we have followed the trace all the way back to old England, there is only one question that remain to be asked. Who constructed the first "highways" throughout much of Europe? The Romans created Europe's first system of highways to speed up commerce but more importantly, to be able to swiftly move troops across their vast empire.

The initial use for these roads were intended for Roman war chariots. Any other user of these roads had to follow the measurements laid out by the legionnaires or risk breaking the axle. And since the Roman Empire has standardized measurement systems for their equipment, it is the military planners of ancient Rome who homogenized the roads to be built in this unwieldy width. 4 feet 8.5 inches is the axle-width of a standard Roman war chariot. It is exactly the width that will comfortably hold two horses side by side to pull a war chariot.

Unquestioning following of ancient traditions has led to a bizarre situation where two standard Roman horses' bums dictate the diameter of the Solid Rocket Boosters for the Space Shuttle. How could that be? Simply because the company responsible for building the Solid Rocket Boosters, Thiokol, is located in Utah. Originally, Thiokol preferred to design the Solid Rocket Boosters with a wider diameter but was faced with a minor snag. To get the boosters to the launch site in Florida meant shipping the boosters by train. The train would have to cross mountains and tunnels. The tunnels were only slightly wider than 4 feet 8.5 inches, which means that the originally designed boosters would have gotten stuck in the tunnels. It was back to the drawing board for the Thiokol team to design a sleeker booster to fit through the tunnels.

This is how it came to be that the design of the boosters for man's most advanced propulsion system was decided upon by two Roman horses' arses!

Liverpool, Here We Go Again

What a start to the season - slooooow.

Reminds me of last year. Chelsea is already pulling away. It's sad to see Everton playing so badly after their magnificent run last year. But Liverpool is playing very badly. Read what Steven Gerard had to say about it :

LIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard branded the Reds 'not good enough' after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City last night.

The Champions League winners took the lead at St Andrews but needed a late penalty to salvage a point after Birmingham stunned the Reds by scoring twice.

'Taking the lead, that was the hard part,' Gerrard said. 'To concede after that was a massive disappointment - not good enough.'

'We came here for three points and we're disappointed to go away with one.'

Substitute Luis Garcia gave Liverpool the lead. But a Stephen Warnock own goal and Walter Pandiani's first of the season after a mistake from Reds goalkeeper Jose Reina had seemingly put Birmingham on track for all three points.

Teenage debutant Neil Kilkenny handed Liverpool their vital spot kick, punching the ball off the line, and Djibril Cisse scored the penalty.

Gerrard said on Warnock's error: 'I feel for Stevie. I've done it myself in a Cup final so I know exactly how he feels but he'll learn from that.

'The keeper won't be happy with his mistake but he's been superb for us. We need to forget about mistakes and take the positives,' he told Sky Sports News.

Liverpool have had a stuttering start to their English Premiership campaign. Though unbeaten, Rafael Benitez's side had scored just one goal in their four League matches before the Birmingham draw.

The Reds now face two home games against Premiership champions Chelsea, first in the Champions League on Wednesday and then in the League next Sunday.

'I'm looking forward to it, two exciting games,' Gerrard said.

'I'm sure the media will build it up even more so hopefully we can get some good results there.'

Manager Rafael Benitez said the Reds were heading into the Chelsea double-header with a spring in their step.

But he admitted there was work to do to iron out the errors that gifted Birmingham their goals.

'We know that we need to improve in some things,' the Spaniard said.

'It was a pity because I think that we lost two points. The team continues working hard.

'We can start thinking about Chelsea. We approach the game with confidence because we know we can score goals. We are more consistent this year.'

He paid tribute to Luis Garcia, whose introduction just after the hour mark got Liverpool the goal their fans had been waiting for.

'He's a clever player, he plays well between the lines he can play on the right or the left side. He gives us more chances, more opportunities, more space and more game intelligence,' Benitez said.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce was left fuming over referee Steve Bennett's decision to award Liverpool the corner which led to Kilkenny's handball on the line.

'We're very, very disappointed,' Bruce said.

'It was a bad, bad decision which ultimately cost us. How bad it's going to cost us we won't know until the end of the season.

'We've had a pretty lousy start at home but I think we can see signs. There are good players here. We've got to be a little bit patient. Once we get a fully fit squad, we'll be OK.'

September 11th is one of the most difficult days of the year for many of us. Four years ago I stood in nearly exactly this spot and watched a gray cloud that completely obscured this entire view of Manhattan. The day was glorious, the weather benevolent. Both of the Twin Towers had already fallen.

Four years ago I stood here for close to three hours. In that entire stretch of time, no one spoke.

Abandoned farmhouse in Svarfaðadalur, N-Iceland.

The empty house around me ticks and creaks,
A moody end to evening's gentle rains,
A brooding quiet as the daylight wanes,
The secret language empty houses speak.

What stories might this house preserve entire
In rhythmic code composed of click and groan?
Does House recall a sadness with each moan?
Is laughter stored in every plank and wire?

And how might I, a fleeting visitor,
Acquire an ear for stories trapped in time,
And wrap a tale or two in words and rhyme?
How can I tap the House's secret lore?

In silence soft the house slips off to sleep.
Alone I sit, in darkness vast and deep.

cujo sorriso de esperanca
cuja lembrança infunda coragem.

Um amigo ...
ao qual se possa dizer: desculpa!
uma, duas, três vezes ...

Um amigo ...

em qualquer circunstancia,

Um amigo ...

When I was almost finished shooting this an old woman came up to me and explained that she had written a poem (in Dutch; it can be found on a plaque by the waterfront) about the history of Westkapelle's two lighthouses: What we see here is the more recent one built in the 19th century while the older stems from the 15th century. Now, the interesting thing is that the signals of the two lighthouses form a common line at every third round of the older one.
When I was editing this picture it turned out that one of the actions I ran on it produced this heavy light on the left side of the tower, so I decided to keep it to allude to what I had learned two weeks ago...

Hawaii #5 - Clown Fish and a story

Clown fish are amazing, the way they live with the anemone in a symbiotic relationship.

Back in the early 90s when I was living in Hong Kong, my wife (then girlfriend) went diving in the New Territories. It was her first dive in Hong Kong and she saw this lone clown fish and as the fish saw her and it started dancing around her and in front of her mask, as she says "it was dancing like a butterfly, sting like a bee". As she looked around she was quite saddened when she saw how impacted the marine life was in Hong Kong as there were no other clown fish in the immediate area. She ends the story with the hope that the clown fish finds a mate and it's anemone.

She still tells this story.

Liverpool boss Benitez feared 'Mersey mafia' over Owen return

Liverpool boss Benitez feared 'Mersey mafia' over Owen return
tribalfootball.com - September 3, 2005

Liverpool were never serious about bidding for Michael Owen, it has been revealed.

The Telegraph says sources in Spain insist Liverpool had neither the will nor the money to correct their mistake in selling England's senior striker to Spain for a knockdown price of £8 million.

Madrid insiders believe their Anfield counterparts were guided throughout by a fear of seeing Owen join another Premiership club. Obstacle one was the £10-12 million transfer fee. Obstacle two was subtle resistance from Rafa Benitez, the manager, who felt lingering resentment about Owen's decision to leave for Spain before his new Spanish manager had been given a chance to prove his worth.

It's also been suggested that Benitez feared the "Mersey mafia" of Steven Gerrard, Owen, Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy and so allowed Murphy and Owen to leave. Bringing Owen back could have weakened the Spaniard's position in the dressing room.
