* Education programs help with tsunami recovery *

Manchester, New Hampshire (AP) -- Fahmi Yunus was on the phöne with his
mother in Indonesia's Aceh Province when she felt one of the tremors that
preceded December's tsunami. They cut the conversation short so she could
get out of the house.

By the time Yunus got home to Banda Aceh from Jakarta, he learned that his
parents and his pregnant wïfe had vanished among the many thousands killed
in the tsunami. He spent three months searching for them before deciding
to set aside his grief and look for ways to help others.

Haze in Kuala Lumpur

Looking out of the window from my office at Empire Tower at 6.20 pm on a gloomy Tuesday, it looks like the whole city is covered in a blanket of smoke. Visibility is at best a few metres. The Indonesians must be at their antics again - forest burning! These people burn their forest so that the remains become manure for the next planting season. What they dont realize that wind blows smoke, and this smoke flies all the way to Malaysia where we suffer from health problems because of their indiscriminate burning!

The Best I Ever Had

The Best I Ever Had!

"Would you like to stay for lunch?" she asked me. I've always politely turned down the offer many times before. I am ashamed to say that it was for all the wrong reasons.

I would stop to check on this elderly friend of mine. Her home was simple, often times in disarray. Not necessarily dirty, but a reflection of her own disheveled appearance.

The thought of having a meal at her home wasn't very appealing. But that day, I heard that voice calling me to respond to her request.

"Why yes, I think I will stay for lunch," I said.

I think it surprised her. It did me. She was most likely unprepared to hear "yes."

"Oh, well, yes. Really? That would be great," she said stumbling through her response.

I came in and sat in her living room.

"Now, if you aren't prepared, please don't fuss at all," I said.

I could hear her rummaging through her cabinets, opening and closing her refrigerator several times. After a few minutes she called me to come to the kitchen table.

As I entered the room, I could see stacks of newspapers, magazines and a collection of odds and ends scattered throughout. The table was set with two sandwich plates barely nestled in among the stacks of mail, condiments and a few dishes left from a previous meal.

"I hope you like it," she said as she placed sandwiches in front of each of us.

"It's my favorite meal," she said.

"If you made it, I am sure I will love it," I politely responded.

Lifting the top slice of bread I peeked under it to see what exactly I was getting into.

"Ketchup or mustard?" she asked.

"I'll try it plain," I said, still wondering what it was.

She paused, suddenly tilting her head forward. I thought for a moment she was going to say a prayer before our meal. She was crying.

"Are you okay?" I asked her.

Looking up at me she began to apologize. "I know this isn't much of a meal," she said. "It's really all I have."

"My friend, I can't imagine a better meal," I replied.

"Really? I've eaten meatloaf sandwiches since I was a child. It doesn't sound like much to most folks, but this, this is a feast for me," she said.

"We eat meatloaf in the colder winter months," I said.

Then, lowering her sandwich back down to the plate, she turned to me and with trails of tears still visible on her cheeks, she told me her story.

"We were very poor in life. Poor in possessions, not poor in spirit," she said.

She stopped as if reflecting, vividly picturing her childhood days.

"Daddy always made a big thing out of nothing. He could take the simplest thing, of most little value, and make it appear to be a newly discovered treasure. Like meatloaf. We couldn't afford any fancy meats, so ground beef was our filet mignon. When daddy prepared it, it was like he was directing a symphony. The few ingredients were presented, mixed and baked as if he were performing Beethoven's Fifth," she said.

She picked up the sandwich, took a small bite and continued. "The first meal of the week was always meatloaf. In fact it, was often the third and final meal, too. The first was hot and fresh out of the oven, the second a warmed version of it and the last, like what we are having today. A cold meatloaf sandwich."

She took another bite. I still had not begun.

"Don't you like meatloaf, Bob?"

"Yes, I do," I replied, then hesitated as I thought about the possibility of the meatloaf being a week old.

"Good, because I just made this fresh yesterday," she said.

It was heavenly.

"The best I ever had!" I said with a mouthful.

She stopped. Once again she began to cry.

"I'm sorry, maybe you misunderstood me. It wasn't polite of me to speak with a mouthful. I said it was the best I ever had," I said in an effort to assure her.

"I heard you perfectly," she said. Now wiping the tears, she continued. "Bob, that's exactly what my Daddy would say. I swear he could eat garbage and still find greatness in it. Later in my life I realized it was his way of making us think it was a special meal."

We quietly continued our meal, she remembering her childhood and I gratefully thanking God for inviting me to stay.

Meatloaf, "The best I ever had."

Anne Frank

Anne Frank House

On August 1, 1944, the 15 year old Ann Frank made the following entry, the last one that she would make, into her dairy.  "[I] keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if . . . there weren't any other people living in the world."  She and her family were arrested 3 days later.  Anne's writings, her notebooks, diaries and notes, which she started when she was 13 years old, were rescued by friends who helped hide the Frank family during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam.  After his release from a Nazi concentration camp. her father spent his entire life making Anne's legacy available to the world.  Travel to the house where the Franks hid for two years before their arrest, examine the documents and see for yourself the courage of this young woman, her family and friends.  See for yourself that this talented young woman realized her ambition to become a writer, that she did indeed become what we would all 'like to be.'

New Era Unfolds for Malaysia Car Maker

New Era Unfolds for Malaysia Car Maker

New Era Unfolds for Malaysia Car Maker
Sunday July 31, 10:19 pm ET
By Eileen Ng, Associated Press Writer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Selling off a chunk of Malaysia's national car maker Proton to Volkswagen AG -- and possibly surrendering management control -- would likely be a blow to Malaysian pride, but analysts say such a move would be huge boost to Proton as it strives to wean itself off government protection and become globally competitive.

Industry sources Friday said the government's investment arm Khazanah Nasional Berhad may sell up to 30 percent in Proton to the German carmaker for 1.65 billion ringgit ($440 million; euro364 million), in a deal that could give a foreign company control in a national icon under intense competition from other Asian automakers.

Khazanah has confirmed negotiations were being held on Proton's "proposed alliance" with Volkswagen as it seeks to enhance shareholder value and return on investment. Buaplt it said there were no plans "at this point" to divest all or part of its 42.7 percent stake in the carmaker.

A deal ceding management control to Volkswagen runs counter to Malaysia's national car dream. But analysts say it's a crucial incentive to woo a strong foreign partner like Volkswagen, or VW, to ensure it doesn't go under.

"It's all about survival. Proton cannot make it on its own," says Edward Ong, auto analyst at MacQuarie Securities.

"If VW were in control, it would not fear that any technology or regional distribution network it invested in Proton would be subsequently used against it. At the same time, VW's incentive to make Proton succeed increases or else it would be a drag on VW's group earnings."

The possible equity sale followed Monday's removal of embattled chief executive Mahaleel Ariff, who has been at odds for months with Proton's board of directors over the company's future direction.

It is unclear how a deal with VW might be structured, but Khazanah is likely to retain a "golden share" in Proton. Such shares, common in state-linked companies, give the government veto powers over key strategic decisions.

Investors have cheered the unfolding developments, driving up Proton's share price nearly 12 percent over the week to close Friday at 9.20 ringgit.

VW officials said Friday they were in talks about their cooperation and work with Proton and future plans, but were far from any concrete solutions or decisions. They would not comment on the reports about a 30 percent stake.

Malaysia's member of parliament, Nur Jazlan Mohamed, says Proton's new direction marks a "major policy shift for Malaysia."

"Clearly Proton cannot continue in the same mold. Proton needs to have access to a global network and build economies-of-scale because production costs will continue to rise and competition is heating up," he says.

Proton was set up as a symbol of Malaysian self-reliance in heavy industry but after 22 years, quality remains its biggest shortcoming -- something that has been exposed as tariffs are gradually torn down under a regional free trade agreement.

The carmaker has sought to lift its image by acquiring British sports car manufacturer Lotus and Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta Moto SpA. It also invested huge sums to develop its own engine and platforms, and expanded assembly overseas including in Indonesia, the Middle East and China.

But its performance remains pallid, with a low annual production of around 200,000 cars and exports accounting for only 5 percent of its total sales.

Proton's domestic market share also shrunk steadily from 57 percent in 1993 to around 30 percent in June, as Asian carmakers including South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. and Japan's Nissan Motor Co. erode its business by introducing locally assembled models at competitive prices. MacQuarie's Ong says a tie-up with Volkswagen will strengthen Proton's branding and boost its flagging sales.

"Proton's current models are simply uncompetitive. VW's Fox, Golf, and Passat could all be manufactured in Malaysia with very few modifications and quickly refresh Proton's model range," he says.

By tapping into German technical know-how, Proton can also potentially cut its high research and development expenses by as much as 500 million ringgit (US$133 million,euro111 million) a year, Ong says.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, will get an opportunity to grow its market share in Asia, which last year accounted for just 6.6 percent of its 5.1 million sales, he says. The German automaker has plants in China and India, and by buying into Proton, it will get access to plants here capable of rolling out 380,000 cars a year that can be increased to 1 million units.

Ong says the VW deal will make Proton an attractive stock and could lift its price up to 17 ringgit.

Yahoo! Sports - World Soccer - Training camp boost for Italian jobless pros

Training camp boost for Italian jobless pros

By Simon Evans

FLORENCE, Italy, Aug 1 (Reuters) - As the new European season approaches, footballers without a club know it is far better to be put through your paces by a bellowing coach than be sat at home hoping for the phone to ring.

Italian football has a way of looking after those scores of professionals without a job as July turns into August.

For 20 years the Italian Footballers' Association (AIC), effectively a trade union for players, has run pre-season training camps for out-of-contract players.

For 60 of the quickest off the mark there is the chance to keep in shape at facilities designed for the elite -- the Coverciano training centre on the outskirts of Florence.

Coverciano, with its immaculate pitches, state-of-the-art gym, swimming pool and medical centre is where Marcello Lippi's Italy side prepare for World Cup qualifiers and is the home base for the 'Azzurri,' complete with residences and lecture theatres.

"It is a beautiful place to train. The pitches are perfect, there is an organisation behind you and excellent coaching staff," David Sesa, member of Roy Hodgson's Switzerland side at Euro '96 and former Serie A performer with Napoli, told Reuters.

Now a 32-year old out-of-contract winger, after he was released by Serie C2 club Palazzolo, Sesa says the desire to keep in shape is what brings most players to the centre.

"You have to be fit because you never know when a club is going to call and ask you to play in a friendly or come on trial -- and you have to be ready," he says.

Walking into the lobby at Coverciano, the visitor is greeted by a large colour photo of the Italy team which won the 1982 World Cup. Throughout the complex, portraits of Italian greats look down from the walls.

But the players currently working out on the lush, green fields have had more modest careers and are far from guaranteed work in the game when their careers end.

It is not just pre-season training, led by coaches, that the AIC offers its members. Alongside two training sessions a day, the players undergo a coaching qualification course which provides a future safety net of alternative work.

They also keep themselves 'match fit' by playing in friendly games against sides from the top two divisions.

The 60 players are split into three squads of 20 and this season Modena, Messina and Serie A club Parma among the opponents for 'FC Unemployed'.

TEAM SPIRIT

Biagio Savarese, head of the coaching team, says it is remarkable how quickly a group of players from different clubs and regions gel into what he calls a real team.

"The team spirit seems to come naturally - footballers are used to being part of a group. These are lads who are going through a difficult moment but they come together with others who are in the same boat.

"We keep them busy, keep their minds and their bodies occupied and they enjoy it. We get great results," he adds.

The AIC says that around 95 percent of the players who attend the Coverciano camp end up eventually finding a club.

But that task is getting ever harder as Italian football struggles with acute financial problems brought on by heavy over-spending that followed the liberalisation of the transfer market in the 1990s.

"Everything has changed," says Sesa, "The Bosman ruling meant clubs could offer a lot initially but now they -- and we-- are paying for their errors.

"Salaries are going down and clubs are only offering one-year deals -- you hardly ever see anyone over the age of 24 or 25 getting a two or three-year contract anymore," he says.

IDEAL CHANCE

'FC Unemployed' have no fans to support them but their friendly matches offer an ideal chance for clubs to take a look at potential free transfer signings.

While little may be at stake for their opponents, the Coverciano-based players know that their performances will be being closely watched by scouts and agents.

Much-travelled goalkeeper Davide Micillo, once on the books of Juventus and more recently Brescia and Parma, says the players try to block out any thoughts of who might be noting their moves in the stands.

"It is better not to think about it. You have to be calm and focused if you want to show people what you can do, you should never go out thinking that you are on trial," he said.

"We come from all over the country but we become a team when we get together -- we are a bit like a national side in that respect," the keeper says with a grin.

But, despite the blue and white training kit and the lunch in a restaurant that at other times serves Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti, the national team is a long, gone dream for these players.

The enjoyment of working out with temporary team mates in world class facilities is infinitely preferable to the lone jogging so many players in Europe face but it can never ease the players' worries over finding work.

As he heads off for his pasta, Sesa turns and has the final word: "If anyone is interested -- here I am"

tribalfootball.com - Real Madrid's Owen prefers Man Utd over Liverpool

tribalfootball.com - Real Madrid's Owen prefers Man Utd over Liverpool

It's amazing how one's fortunes can turn around in life. I wrote about Micahel Owen a few weeks back where I mentioned that he left Liverpool in search of tropihies, only for the trophies to come to Liverpool.

And now he wants to return to Liverpool, initially. But when Rafa Benitez was cool towards his hints, he is now eyeing Manchester United. What a traitor.

Someone once said that no player is greater than the club, and when the club is Liverpool, this statements stands out even more.

Michael Owen, you made your choice, now you have to bear the consequences. You turned your back on Liverpool when it needed you the most.
