Mother Nature's Fury on an Oil Platform

Mother Nature unleased her fury on this oil platform for damaging the environment with unending drilling for oil.

The irony of this picture is that the platform is currently only supported by its 4 flow lines (look at the 4 inner pipes), and not by its supports (the external pillars that were supposed to hold the platform in place). The flow lines were meant to guide the flow of oil and other minerals from the ground into the platform and was never designed to hold the platform at all. The platform's main supports are damaged beyond recovery.

The world is changing - the environment is becoming harsher by the day - no thanks to global warming and our excessive need for material wealth and consumption.

How Smart Is Your Right Foot?

This is so funny that it will boggle your mind. And you will keep trying it at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot. But you
can't!!!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction!!!

An Oil Rig

What you see in the background is an oil rig. That's what most people see - what they dont see is the amount of pipework and subsea structures (PLEM, PLET, christmas trees, valves, pig launchers and so forth) that lie on the seabed.

The oil rig is definitely the most famous structure in the whole oil extraction system and its the most dangerous place to be where heat and oil sometimes tend to mix too closely. The purpose of an oil rig is to drill oil. A rig is usually constructed directly above an oil well and drills are sent deep into the ground to extract the oil. Once oil has been extracted, some basic processing is done on the rig where oil and impurtities are separated before the oil is sent to shore vis subsea pipes or to a nearby FPSO where further processing is done.

Here's a more interesting explanation about an oil rig.

Would You Prefer Russion or African Roulette?

The foreign minister of a small African state had opportunity to visit Russia for the very first time. There he was warmly welcomed by his Russian counterpart, who wined and dined him and generally offered him the best hospitality that Russia could offer.

On his last day, the Russian foreign minister took the African foreign minister into a room with a table on which lay a revolver. "My comrade, since you are about to leave, I must introduce you to a custom we have here in Russia, something called Russian roulette. It is a true test of manhood and worth, and how it works is that you must take the revolver, spin the cylinders, hold the revolver to your head and then pull the trigger. Only one of the six chambers is loaded."

The African leader, being of proud warrior stock and a courageous man, took the revolver, spun the cylinder, snapped it shut, pointed it at his head and sighed with relief when all he heard was 'click', but no shot.
Well impressed with his bravery, he and the Russian drank vodka until the African leader had to be carried aboard his plane.

Six months later the Russian foreign minister visits the African foreign minister¹s country. The African, remembering keenly the Russian roulette he had to play previously, took the Russian into a room on the last day of his visit. In the room were six beautiful, naked young women.

"To prove your courage and manhood, see before you six of the most beautiful women from each of our tribes. This is something I call 'African roulette'. You may pick any one of them and they will give you a blowjob."

The Russian, not too averse to this idea at all, asks the African, "But where is the risk? To be called roulette there must be some form of risk involved."
The African smiles broadly. "One of the six is a cannibal."

Whether You Know It Or Not, We Might All Perish This October

Yes, I am serious about this while excited about it too. I'm not too excited about dying early but excited about the possibility of opening up Pandora's box on the origins of our universe.

It has been called an Alice in Wonderland investigation into the makeup of the universe - or dangerous tampering with nature that could spell doomsday.

Whatever the case, the most powerful atom-smasher ever built comes online Wednesday, eagerly anticipated by scientists worldwide who have awaited this moment for two decades.

The machine at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, promises scientists a closer look at the makeup of matter, filling in gaps in knowledge or possibly reshaping theories.

The first beams of protons will be fired around the 27-kilometer, or 17-mile, tunnel to test the controlling strength of the world's largest superconducting magnets. It will still be about a month before beams traveling in opposite directions are brought together in collisions that some skeptics fear could create micro "black holes" and endanger the planet.

"This only happens once a generation," said Katie Yurkewicz, spokeswoman for the U.S. contingent at the CERN project. "People are certainly very excited."

The CERN collider is designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, whizzing 11,000 times a second around the tunnel 46 meters, or 150 feet, to 150 meters under the bucolic countryside on the French-Swiss border.

Once the beam is successfully fired counterclockwise, a clockwise test will follow. Then the scientists will aim the beams at each other so that protons collide, shattering into fragments and releasing energy under the gaze of detectors filling cathedral-sized caverns at points along the tunnel.

CERN dismisses the risk of micro black holes, subatomic versions of collapsed stars whose gravity is so strong they can suck in planets and other stars.

CERN hopes to recreate conditions in the laboratory a split-second after the Big Bang, teaching them more about "dark matter," antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time.

Side Note: What on earth is an atom smasher or supercollider? And who is CERN?

Is Life Racing By?

Is life racing by you?

Last night something made me think about life and I realized that I've been the same for the last 4 years. 4 long years or 1450 days or 35,000 hours or 126 million seconds has gone by and yet I have not achieved anything significant in my life. Thank God I dont have ALS or any other disease that makes me an invalid who preys on other people's goodwill but other than a great job, wonderful wife, horrible traffic, what do I have to shout about? Others my age have done something significant in their lives, like working on the human genome project, or building the next spacecraft that will take man to the outer limits of space but I have dont nothing of those sort. I have sacrificed my dreams for a comfortable, a very comfortable living.

I was so caught up in the rat race that I hadn't realized that 35 thousand hours have passed by and I have aged but other than the books that I have read, I am still the same old me. I havent done anything significant in my life. At this rate, I'll just end up being one of the 6 billion people in the world who lived and never did anything for humanity. There's close to 6 billion people in the world today and everyone's thinking about themselves. Humans are a very selfish creature. The exceptions to it are those who see the world as a small village and do their best to make others live a better live. I want to be the exception.
